SEE RED "Rise" EP Reviews

  From http://www.hardrockhaven.net/ , USA

It's always tough to pick a "cool" band name. Unless you are a progressive metal band and know you will automatically use words like, "Knight ... steel ... war ... dragon, etc." in your title, coming up with something that stands apart from the others is difficult. So, when the blokes from Britain came upon the name "See Red," they won that race. Is it a verb? Is it a definition, or a premonition? Whatever it is, the members of the band who make up See Red blend the Classic Rock stylings of Thin Lizzy with more modern bands like Alice in Chains, and do leave a tangible NWOBHM taint on most of their compositions. This is no-frills heavy rock at its best, in other words.

Their new EP, titled Rise, is a brief hint at what could be…

…The title track, "Rise," is laden with guitar effects and a bit of a hippy-vibe at times. Sort of like if Black Sabbath was ever in a good mood, or, if Led Zeppelin ever wasn't. You won't hear too many bands be able to compose music that could fit in both the '70s and today, but See Red has done it on their new EP. The ambience and atmosphere of "Rise" shows marked improvement in songwriting since their prior EP, and it's far and away the most interesting track here. Moody and somewhat forlorn, "Rise" rules.

The EP ends with their heaviest composition, a razor-honed riff attack called "Selective Amensia." This is the best guitar song, shoving them to the forefront and making everything else somewhat secondary. "I don't have to hate you; I just have to walk away," goes the chorus, a pretty mature statement for such a seething song. Wolfendale is a force once again, and the intricacies and tempo changes take this from a heavy metal to a classic rock to an almost prog-rock song at the guitar solo. Weird and good ...

One must have hope that See Red goes full-length next time. This is their second EP (Scars Across Your Soul) and it's time for the guys to put on their big-boy pants and whip out a CD with at least 10 songs on. It's tough to judge the merit of any band on just four songs, so, the best thing you can say is that See Red definitely leaves you wanting to hear more of their music. That, and what's cooler than saying "See Red" when someone asks, "What the hell are you listening to?"

"...mixing classic metal with some thrash roots. They approach the material with enthusiasm and a degree of talent and across all the tracks you can tell the band truly believe in what they are doing.

...they have one classic here. The title track is when they let themselves go, exploring a more melodic, classic rock direction, and it really is a peach of a song. I'll have more like that, please.

They've put considerably more thought into the arrangements than most new metal bands, obviously working things out carefully before pushing record, rather than just plugging in and banging it out.

If you want to encourage new British metal, then this is a good place to start."

The band See Red from Britain returns with their second effort, their second EP "Rise"
Their music is somewhere between Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Soundgarden and Corrosion Of Conformity with vocals close to Chris Cornell's ones. Four pretty good compotisions... The production is also pretty good with a very good guitar sound. Of course is difficult for someone to understand the music of See Red from theese four tracks (about 20 minutes of music) but their sound is really good ...

The British rockers of See Red are back! The band plays Classic '70s spacerock 'till early '90s hardrock and stoner. Great pounding hardrock for fans of Samhain, Danzig, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Guns 'N Roses, Alice 'N' Chains and Black Label Society. The band is solid as a rock and I personally think that rock & metal fans from the last 30 years have to check See Red out. Check it out!

SEE RED "Scars Across Your Soul" EP Reviews

See Red have an interesting quality and sound. Combining multiple styles and influences, the band mix Blues, Rock and Metal to create a very catchy vibe. Opening track severed starts with some quite fast guitaring, before settling back into a heavy groove. The vocals are a good marriage with this almost sludgy musical track. The track sounds almost Metallica-like in composition, yet not a blatant rip off and very unique. Twist The Myth has a slower musical start before taking on a faster pace and combining good lyrical inspiration with an almost Alice In Chains Rock/Metal groove. A very well-crafted track. "Scars Across Your Soul" is very much in the Metallica King Nothing vein, but with more earthy vocal qualities about it, while Wait For An Answer has good use of melody to accompany the lead vocals and a good solid slab of rock. See Red will have a big future and this 5-track EP shows some real promise. The bands influences run deep and there should be something for everyone into Rock to get from Scars Across Your Soul

GLEN BUTLER, Powerplay Magazine

The band See Red, hailing from England, offers a unique brand of classic metal, semi-thrash along with raging guitar solos. Their new demo, Scars Across Your Soul, is a quick five song, 21-minute journey which really makes you beg for more. The first track, "Severed," is reminiscent of mid-80s Armored Saint, and lead singer Rich Davenport sings with that manly, heavy, lower range voice John Bush uses. The riffs are heavy, and the chorus is simplistic and repetitive, but it's really the music following the chorus where it kicks you in the chest. The drums by DJ Powell need to be a little stronger in the mix next time around, but he has a bit of a punk vibe in his style.

The best part about this song is the guitar after the last chorus. [Davenport] rips into a frenzied solo, and it's fast and smooth. Good intro to the band. "Twist the Myth" is easily their best composition here. This has a more classic metal feel to it as well, and Davenport's vocals are again low and strong. The drums this time sound closer to Slayer than anything else. The guitars are low and brooding, but the chorus, just repeating "Twist the myth," is addictive. They might want to work on the backing vocals as well, since it's simple two-part harmony, but calls for something bigger. Again, the solo tears into you, quick and searing.

"Drag Me Out," is a menacing, cool song...they end things with "Wait for an Answer," a happier sounding song, at least musically, than anything else on the CD. The hook is catchy, but it's the guitar effects and bass playing by Ian Schofield you'll be focusing on. The drums are wicked again, and the chorus is almost '80s pop friendly. A different song, but one they pull off with no difficulty.

See Red are already working on a new EP, so these guys aren't waiting around to see what happens. Check out their new EP, and get ready for their next one.

Derric Miller, Hard Rock Haven website

This a British band that's trying to bring back the spirit of bands like THIN LIZZY, with a hard rock sound, a "regular guy" on vocals, and solid songs. When I say they have a regular guy doing the vocals, I mean they don't have a power metal screamer, death metal grunter, or black metal shrieker. He's just a guy on the microphone without an attitude problemWhat we have here is essentially a classic rock band that comes from modern times ...I wouldn't say that SEE RED are regressing, they are keeping the spirit of classic hard rock alive. That can only be a good thing.

See Red are an awesome classic rock band. They have a unique sound wrapped up in the old style rock we all know and love...I recommend them highly!!

Kim Bell (UK Metal Underground)

Great band, influenced by lots of national and international bands like: Samhain, Danzig, AC/DC, Black Sabbath and Thin Lizzy. It is a mix of 70s spacerock bands and early 90s hardrock. Nice foot-stompin hardrock that should go down well with any rocker from the last 3 decades. The band consists of four decent musicians that all four also provide great backing vocals. DJ Powell (drums/vocals) and Rich Davenport (guitar/vocals) take care of the vocals for the most part and they do this superbly. See Red is recommended to anyone who likes hardrock music from the last 30 years.
